Buy used. most new riders will drop their bike at least once. It's better to scratch up a used bike while you're learning than a mint new one. I'd go for a used Ninja 500 or Suzuki GS500. These are way better as a first bike, and for commuting, than a new 600 sport bike.

Personally, I would find a used CBR 600F4i. They are MUCH more comfortable than the RR.

The Ninja will be easier to control, since it's an older design with less power.

I know there's a lot of controversy on this, but if you are smart, I think it's easier to start on a Hayabusa than a 600RR. Before you laugh, let me tell you that a beginner can ride a Busa as long as they keep it out of the powerband. It is much harder for a beginner to keep a 600cc rocketbike out its powerband. Go ahead, criticize me, but it makes sense - keep a Busa under 6000RPM, and you'll be fine as a beginner.
